The Rules
The Roles
Mafia
The Mafia get to kill one player each night by sending me a PM with the name of the player they wish to kill. The mafia players may communicate with each other in any way they see fit at night time only.
The Don - Kahlan
The Don is the leader of the Mafia, the Grand High Poobah, whose word is never questioned (openly at least).
Once during the game (day or night), the Don may elect to recruit a player to replace a dead Mafia role. This may only occur if a Mafia power role has died (Don's Wife, Crooked Cop, Mysterious Stranger if they choose Mafia). The recruited player will assume the role of the dead Mafia player and will relinquish their previous role. If the player the Don attempts to recruit is the War Hero, the Assassin (before he has assassinated anyone), the Drunk (while still drunk), the Clairvoyant (if she is a True Seer) or one of the Village Idiots, the recruitment will fail.
The recruitment will take effect from the beginning of the phase following the one in which I receive the PM from the Don (i.e. beginning of the night if the recuitment is during the day, beginning of the day if the recuitment is during the night).
If the Don is lynched, the surviving Mafia will each receive a revenge vote to use for the following lynch. The Don's Wife, if alive, will receive two revenge votes. This vote is in addition to their regular vote, and is anonymous (PM me witht he name of the player to vote for). A revenge vote can only be directed against a player who voted to lynch the Don. The revenge votes will only be revealed in the lynch post.
The Don's Wife - colorlessgreen
The Don's Wife, in addition to telling her husband which pants to wear and how high to jump, has the ability to ruin people's plans (which she discovers through a well-maintained network of spies). she knows just how to subtley threaten the right people to prevent anything she doesn't want to happen. Each night, the Don's Wife may PM me the name of a non-mafia player. Any night actions of that player will be blocked. The Don's Wife may not block the same player twice.
The Crooked Cop - alterego
The Crooked Cop loves to interrogate people. Especially if he knows they're innocent. Each night, the Corrupt Cop may PM me the name of one other player. That player will be detained for questioning the following day. The player detained cannot post in the thread at all while they are detained, nor can they be voted for. The Crooked Cop cannot detain the same player twice.
While a player is detained, the Crooked Cop may send me a PM with a guess of what the detained player's role is. I will tell them if the guess is correct or not.
Mafia Goons (4) - secretcowlevel, capricasix, muzzz, OneTreeHill
The Mafia Goons are usually the ones doing the dirty work. They are unexceptional men, and are invisible to the Clairvoyant's Inner Sight unless she is a True Seer, but otherwise have no power.
Townies
The War Hero - merlin
The War Hero is greatly respected by the whole town, and as a result his opinion on contentious matters is given greater weight than the average townie's. The War Hero's vote will count double in the event of a tied vote (avoiding no lynch in the case of a tie between players, and preventing a lynch in the case of a tie between a player and “no lynch”).
The War Hero cannot be recruited by the Don.
The Town Drunk - soylentred
The Town Drunk knows a great many things about the townsfolk, but due to his perpetual drunkeness, he does tend to get things a bit mixed up. The drunk has the ability to discover the identities of the mafia and the alliance of the Mysterious Stranger. However, he must first "sober up".
To attempt to "sober up", once each day the Drunk may PM me the name of another player. If that player is either the Nurse or the Doctor (the Drunk will not be told which he has found, though it may be obvious if the other has already been lynched), the Drunk will be told they are now sober.
Once sober, the Drunk will receive a PM each night with the name (but not the role) of a mafia player or the Mysterious Stranger's alliance, chosen randomly. This means they could receive the same name multiple times if unlucky.
The Drunk cannot be recruited by the Don until he is sober.
The Clairvoyant - slinky
The Clairvoyant likes to think she has the gift gift of True Sight, that can see through to the core of who a person really is. Whether she truly does or not is doubtful.
At any point in the game, the Clairvoyant may PM me the name of any two other players (alive or dead) who she thinks may be mafia. She will then be able to use her Inner Sight to spy the true nature of other players. Once per night, the Clairvoyant may PM me the name of another player, and will receive a reading with a colour indicating whether they are good (white), neutral (grey), or bad (black). How accuarte these readings are depend on how accurate her guess of the two mafia players was. If she guessed both correct, she is a True Seer, and her readings will be 100% accurate. If she guessed one correctly, she will be a Seer, and her readings will be correct except for the Mafia Goons (will show white); the Mysterious Stranger (will show grey no matter what his chosen alliance); the Town Drunk (will show black if still drunk, grey if sober); and the Assassin (will show black). If she guess both incorrectly, she is a Charlatan, and the results will be completely random. The Clairvoyant will not know how accurate her readings truly are (because she is convinced she is a True Seer ).
The Clairvoyant cannot be recruited by the Don if she is a True Seer. (She can be recruited before this is determined.)
The Doctor - water_moon
In addition to being able to "sober up" the Town Drunk, the Doctor can heal the wounds of people killed during the night. Each night, the Doctor may PM me the name of a player they wish to heal. If that player is attacked during the night, they will not die, but will be healed. If the Nurse has found the Doctor, the healing will be instant. If not, the healing will require a day to be spent in hospital. A player so healed cannot post, vote, or be voted for the following day.
If the Doctor dies, the Nurse (if alive and unrecruited) will assume the healing ability, but it will require the recovery period.
The Nurse - goltar
In addition to being able to "sober up" the Town Drunk, the Nurse can assist the Doctor in healing players attacked at night. In order to do so, she must first find the Doctor. Each phase (day and night), the Nurse may PM me the name of a player who they think may be the Doctor. If that player is the Doctor, she will begin to assist the healing of players from that point. The Nurse and the Doctor may also communicate with each other from this point.
Clarification: The Doctor or the Nurse being detained will have no effect on healing/recovery.
The Doctor being role-blocked or killed will prevent healing for that night.
The Nurse being role-blocked or killed will cause any healing that night to require a recovery period.
The Doctor can heal themselves or the Nurse.
The order of precedence is: Assassin kill -> Mafia role block -> Doctor healing -> Mafia night kill.
The Assassin - Nazdakka
The Assassin has been hired by the Town to take out one of their leaders. Each night, the Assassin may PM me the name of another player who they suspect may be a Mafia power role (the Don, the Don's Wife, the Crooked Cop, or the Mysterious Stranger if they choose Mafia). If the player named is one of these roles, they will be assassinated and the Mafia will lose their night kill for that night.
The Assassin cannot be recruited by the Don until after they have succeeded in assassinating a Mafia power role (i.e. they are no longer the Assassin but a BOPT).
Boring Old Plain Townies (BOPTs) (8) - tornvalor, FIREHORSE, nolecub, ludacris, Nac Runo, calamity, bobthewarrior, Xanth
The name says it all really. Each night each BOPT may send me a PM naming a living player they think may be another BOPT. I will not indicate whether they were correct or not, but I will keep track of all guesses. Any BOPT who eventually manages to name all the BOPTs who are living at that point, will receive a list via PM of the BOPTs who are still alive, and they may select one other living BOPT to communicate with.
Neutral
The Village Idiots (2) - wrayburn, maatianna
The Village Idiots are, as the name suggests, idiots. They think that the lynch vote is a popularity contest. The goal of the Village Idiots is to get themselves lynched. If both Village Idiots succeed in getting themselves lynched before the Town or Mafia are eliminated, they win the game. If one Village Idiot is night killed, the other if still alive will become a BOPT.
The Mysterious Stranger - starman (replaced lazarussham)
Nobody really knows what the Mysterious Stranger is up to. The Mysterious Stranger will be given a choice of alliance (Mafia or Townie). This decision must be made by the beginning of day 2. Once this choice has been made, they will be given a choice between two possible powers. This choice must be made by the beginning of day 3. If a power is not chosen, the Stranger will become a Mafia Goon or a BOPT.
The Mysterious Stranger may elect to remain neutral by not choosing an alliance. In this case, they will be informed of the identity of the 2 Village Idiots, and will become in effect an assistant trying to sway others to vote for the Idiots.
Winning the Game
The Mafia
The Mafia win the game if they successfully eliminate the Town.
The Town
The Town win the game if they successfully eliminate the Mafia.
The Neutrals
The Neutrals win the game if both Village Idiots are lynched before either the Mafia or the Town are eliminated.
- These rules incorporate and are subserviant to water_moon's forum rules. She is said to be in possession of a nasty stick that can inflict horrible punishments such as cookie deprivation, the evil eye, and banning. So play nice!
- No editing posts once the game begins. If you make a mistake, stand there and whistle all innocent-like, and then make another post.
- No posting in the thread at night time. If you accidentally post after nightfall, edit the text out as soon as you realise it.
- Dead is dead. Do not post when you are dead. Instead, sit back and form a grudge for the next game.
- No quoting, paraphrasing, or communicating via telepathy the contents of your role PM.
- No impersonating the host or George W. Bush.
- No getting personal – it's not a matter of life and death (it's so much more than that... ).
- In an experimental break with tradition (and I am not in any way nicking this idea from anywhere else *whistles all innocent-like*), you may only vote once per day (game day that is). Yes, this does mean that you cannot change your vote.
- Game days will last 48 hours, game nights 24 hours. In another experimental break with tradition, the game will begin on day 1, rather than night 1.
- If you do not wish to vote for anyone on a given day, you must vote for no lynch.
- A vote shall be bolded and on a separate line as follows:
vote: Jason
or it shall be laughed at and considered invalid (in that order). - The player with the most votes each day shall be lynched.
- A lynch will not occur if “no lynch” receives more votes than any player.
- In the event of a tied vote between a player and “no lynch”, the player shall be lynched unless the War Hero has voted for “no lynch”.
- In the event of a tied vote between 2 (or more) players, the player voted for by the War Hero shall be lynched, otherwise there will be no lynch.
- The role of lynched players will be revealed. The role of night killed players will be revealed only to the Mafia if the first attack is successful, but will be revealed to everyone if the player is healed and subsequently attacked again.
- Failure to vote (or post at all) does not count as a vote for no lynch. Instead, a failure to vote or post on any given day will result in the player being punished the following day. The punishment will take the form of a requirement to post in a certain way (e.g. may only use consonants, no puncuation allowed, have to write every word backwards).
- All coomunication between players during the day phase must be via the game thread. Those who are able to communicate with other players outside the game thread (Mafia at the start, Doctor and Nurse and BOPTs later) may only do so at night.
- No non-game-related cheese, please. This means things like checking when people are logged in. Everything should be based on what is posted in the thread.
- Whatever I've forgotten.
