I see a few names that I recognize and haven't seen for a while, and was kindly given the invitation to say hi, so I thought would. About me: I guess I'll stick with the same ol' childish forumname as before, although I don't mind if anyone wants to refer to me by my proper name: Kevin I'm 31, grew up in Nova Scotia, Canada, but I've been in Colorado for 8+ years, and I'm not intending to leave until sometime after my knees tell me I'm not allowed to ski anymore. I've lived in a few places in the US for a few years before that, and used to travel regularily in my old job, but Colorado is (mostly) home now. Speaking of skiing, it's currently enjoying an extended run as my favourite hobbie/borderline-fixation. In fact, we're supposed to have our first 6+ inch snow day on Wednesday, and I'm already making plans and preparations, not to mention my growing sense of anticipation . Other hobbies include hiking, photography, tequila, music (listening mostly - I'm trying to learn guitar, but I'm just starting), cooking and reading (a mixture of brain-candy and classics). Professionally, I'm currently "retired". I have been for ~6 months, and love everything about it except the pay. There's just so many other interesting things to do in life besides work, but most of them don't pay very well. ;D Before my retirement I did GIS software work for large utility companies, (Verizon, Hydro Quebec, etc.) - programming, QA, testing, implementation, and consluting (yes, I spelled it that way on purpose - it's a more accurate description ). I hope to NOT go back to that work when it is time to seriously pursue work again, but who can tell? I guess that's about it for now. It's nice to see a few familiar faces, and although it doesn't look like the traffic is too heavy here, hopefully I'll have a chance to 'catch up' with a few of you. cheers, Kevin

Hi, Kevin! why don't you just create a nick as Kevin and then intro yourself in it as "formerly sirpoopsalot"? That should do it. I've always loved my periods of retirement, too, except when the money ran out...I wish I would have created something that paid a steady, livable trickle of royalties. Yeah, the traffic has been light around here, but good quality --mostly just me, Water-Moon, and Erics, lately. I never got to ski, but I bet it's wonderful! I always liked snow and I used to skateboard before I smashed my knee up in the motorcycle accident. That and sled-riding is as close as I got to skiing... I kind of wish we had someone like you on our Verizon stuff around here. It never works right... Have you been playing any Diablo II LOD (I still play a lot, SP, as usual) or have you got yourself hooked on something else like WoW? Oh, by the way, make sure to bookmark this site and try to get into the habit of checking it for new messages, because I don't think it has email notification (or if it has I haven't figured it out yet) so people forget to check to see if anyone has answered them! Welcome! I hope to see you around, whether as "sirpoopsalot" or Kevin. Jude

Hi Jude, how's life treating you? Still making & selling art? Any new and exciting (or just new ) news? Any special plans for your holiday weekend? In response to some of your other points: - I think there was something during signup about changing the display-nickname in my profile, and I'll try to look into that. That way I could keep the same login/password combo without trying to remember 'what's where'. I don't really mind the old name, it's just that I think I may have finally outgrown it... a little... maybe. - yes, big, hefty royalties is definitely what we need. I've been racking my brain for such ideas for a long time, and sadly, I've realized that to create something that generates its own income requires luck, brilliance, and/or hard-work. The first is uncontrollable, the second is periodically unattainable (for me), and the third is undesirable... alas, I doubt I'll ever grow rich in that manner either. ;D - knee-problems = yuck. I've had my share as well. 4-5 years later and somedays it still it only takes a chill wind to hobble me for a day or three. However, I've decided it's not allowed to slow me down more than absolutely necessary (and most exercise actually helps), so I whine about it more than anything. Hopefully yours doesn't bug you too much. - Yes, I'm still on D2 as well. I'm usually ~5 years behind the gaming curve for 'what's new and cool', and since D2 is already paid for... My playrate varies a lot depending upon how many other things are happening - to me, it's more of a time-filler than anything (unlike when I started), so D2 takes a backseat a lot of times now. Are you still in the habit of playing lots of different characters, or have you found a few that appeal to you as a more long-term task? I guess that's all for this night; it's been a long day (starting at 5:50 am). Have a great Thanksgiving, and say hi to capybara for me (even if I don't know her that well). Kevin

Welcome! Glad to see you sirp/kevin! Hope your Thanksgiving was good, and that you get to properly spend the day on the slopes free of all the mad shoppers today. Feel free to post up a few picts, carry on about your obsession, lord retirement over the rest of us, etc.

Hi Jude, how's life treating you? Still making & selling art? Any new and exciting (or just new ) news? Any special plans for your holiday weekend? Spent Thanksgiving with my Mom and my partner. What did you do? Still doing art occasionally. Haven't updated my website (except to post some game stuff) for a long time, though. ...and you also have to worry about some corporation tricking or stealing your copyright, or at least the royalties, from you... My knee dislocates, very painfully, at the slightest twist or slip. This then requires a trip to the ER to put it back before I lose all blood flow to the lower leg area, then I can't really walk for a week and the knee is immobilized, then I get to hobble around with a cane for a few months. So, my crazy skateboarding days (and soccer, and baseball, and whatever) are pretty much over. LOL! I started over after I left the SPF a year ago, and I already have about 30 characters! They are all good ones, though. ;D I will. Capybara's actually registered on these forums, but is lazy about posting. I hope you stop by and post sometimes. Don't be afraid to start new topics. Maybe we can get a Diablo II thread going.... Jude

Hope your Thanksgiving was good, and that you get to properly spend the day on the slopes free of all the mad shoppers today. No kidding about the shoppers - absolute madness!!!. As an 'observer of human behaviour', I considered Friday an opportunity to study people and how they interact. So I went to the local mall to eat some hummus, sit on a bench, wander around, and just watch people for about an hour (I also wanted a compass from the sporting goods store). I'd conclude that your point about "mad shoppers" is entirely accurate. As for the slopes, I was pretty sore from Wednesday, so I didn't make it up on turkey-day. Essentially Wednesday's conditions were a fresh blanket of snow on top of a sheet of ice, so it was quite challenging to dig-in and make some good turns without having the snow shift beneath my feet and completely slip away - or having that blanket weigh-down my skis when they'd dug in and I'd tried to lift them from beneath the layer of snow. Basically, the day can be summarized as: I fell - a lot - and each time I landed on ice. And I've got a couple of purple/green spots to prove it (one on each hip, actually). For the most part, turkey-day was spent stumbling around the house in my housecoat, but that wasn't all-bad either. It was certainly relaxing. Some friends came by later, but they skimped on the leftovers this year, so I had to make a turkey sandwich for dinner ;D. How about you? How was your holiday? Feel free to post up a few picts, carry on about your obsession, lord retirement over the rest of us, etc. Ok, here's a teaser pic for you... I recently rediscovered it by having a dig around my harddrive. I took this during the past summer. My sister, nieces, and brother-in-law (who is, fortunately, one of my all-time-best-friends) came to visit, so on one day we went to the local Butterfly Pavilion: www.freewebs.com/sirpoopsalot76/DSC05539.JPGI'll try to get a proper album going someday soon(ish) and post a proper thread when that time comes. Don't hold me down to a specific timeframe though . ***** My knee dislocates, very painfully, at the slightest twist or slip. This then requires a trip to the ER to put it back before I lose all blood flow to the lower leg area, then I can't really walk for a week and the knee is immobilized, then I get to hobble around with a cane for a few months. So, my crazy skateboarding days (and soccer, and baseball, and whatever) are pretty much over. uhg. that sounds horrible. I've had a few torn ligaments, and for the most part strengthening some areas seems to help in the aftermath (example: stronger hamstrings help stabilize ACL's. Edit: At least for guys - I know that a lady's knee structure is a little different and more prone to ACL injury, but I don't know a lot beyond that). I have no idea how you'd rehab a repeated dislocation though. I'd think the repeated dislocations would generate scar tissue and the tissues would generally atrophy too - which makes you more suseptible to further injury. Blech. Having a rough idea of what you've gone through, I shudder to think what your ligaments go through every dislocation (I have a shoulder to match your knee - but I've learned/been taught how to re-locate it on my own, so I can usually skip the ER). (Reaction = ) Have you consulted a physical therapist? In my experience any serious injury is going to take a significant amount of effort to even approach 95% recovery - and it's never a pain-free effort (despite the medical professions' tendencies to minimalize pain when they give their diagnosis/prognosis)... however, most times, the 'investment of pain' in rehab is eventually worth it - in my experience. But I'm certainly not a doctor; I'm just someone that's had enough hard-knocks to learn a few tricks through trial-and-error and self-reliance (why pay a doctor $200 to fix/tape my broken toe when I can tape the darn thing myself, etc.). If you ever want an unlearned, but free, opinion - let me know.

Yeah, every time it dislocates, it rips something. Last time it ripped the ligament right off the front of my shin. That really hurts! The main problem is that when I wrecked the motorcycle, I tore all the cartilage (spelling?) out of my knee, so the only thing really holding my kneecap on is the muscles in my leg and one of those Ace support thingos. And since it's so hilly around here, my calf muscles get developed much more than the muscles above my knee, which tends to make a dislocation act kind of like a slingshot effect, with the calf muscles yanking the kneecap to the side. So, I do exercises to try to keep the leg muscles balanced.
I'm the type who bandages myself up, too (especially for cuts, splinters, and greenstick fractures), but with the knee, it's out of my league.

How about you? How was your holiday? Quite nice, it was fun having the hubby around for 4 whole days. We even ordered a new lap top to replace the almost 9 year old computer so I might even be willing to play HC D2 in MP. Unfourtionatly, the baby learned how to stand up but not how to sit with out falling over so she spends the first 20 minutes to an hour of "napping" in a cycle of standing up, screaming, fussing, falling, babbeling, repeat and variations there of.

You can still change your displayed name. Just switch it from sirp to Kevin, though you'll still have to log in as sirp (unless you went the lazy way like I did and told it to keep you logged in forever).
